Subsound

Leigh ‘Subsound’ Montague started his musical journey at primary school, learning to play clarinet at the age of 9, but moved on to play drums and percussion at a small music school near his home just outside of Oxford at the age of 11. Immediately falling in love with the rhythmic sounds of drums he ditched the clarinet and sought after a drum kit.

Although growing up listening to the prodigy at a wrongly young age, his early teenage years saw him join a punk rock band, gigging around Oxfordshire. This band lasted through secondary school, and into college where he started a music technology A-Level, hoping to gain the skills needed to record and produce his band.

Unfortunately these two college years saw the death of the band so he started to focus on the production side of music. This lead to enrolling on a music technology degree, at 19, in south east London, where Subsound now lives.

In his first year he started working on Propellerheads Reason on an extremely slow pc laptop busting out breaks using loops, and this swiftly moved onto drum and bass. Upgrading to a Mac and Logic in his second year, he started to create his own beats and sounds and began to develop as a producer.

Having set up a Myspace page in early November, a small fan base quickly followed, resulting in ‘Surge’ being played as ‘dub of the week’ on Internet d’n’b station Aftershock.
